Mona Island a unique destination for experienced divers.
DIVING Mona Island
Join us for an amazing week aboard the Juliet diving Mona Island. There is a limit of 10 divers for the trip.
Just 45 miles from the west coast of Puerto Rico lies an untouched diving oasis called Mona Island. Here, the diving is some of the best around, beautiful walls and pinnacles, coral heads the size of houses – but it is not for everyone. Mona island is known for its pristine and awe-inspiring diving, but also for it’s challenging surface conditions and unpredictable currents. They say there is no such thing as a free lunch, after all. Average water temperatures between December and April are 77-80 degrees.
Juliet departs from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and spends the first day diving the west coast of Puerto Rico to get everyone’s feet wet, so to speak, and prepare you for diving Mona and Monito the next day.
Once at Mona, cliffs and caves abound, and there is no lack of marine diversity here as the entire island, and her sister Monito, are an ecological preserve. Turtles, sharks, dolphins, and other large animals frequently visit the Mona Passage – the deep water channel nearby – and cruise by the reefs on their way. In the winter months, you can hear whale songs on the walls, and it is not uncommon to see humpback whales in the area either.
The last day will be spent drift diving at Desecheo before heading back for dinner at the dock Thursday night. After a week of rolling around, you’ll be grateful for a calm meal by then!
Plan to arrive at the boat by 1 or 2 pm on December 10.
Juliet Liveaboard - Juliet is a 104′ three masted schooner that began her life as a freight boat in 1974 and was redesigned as a dive boat in 2003 with comfort and safety in mind. There are 6 private cabins easily accessible from on deck or through the main companionway. The Main Salon seats 12 comfortably, has an entertainment center with flat screen TV, DVD library, and Sirius Radio. On deck you will find an expansive sundeck for lounging, additional seating for al fresco dining, a crow’s nest in which you can take a watch, 12 tank stations with large private gear holds where tanks are immediately refilled, and a top-side shower with plenty of hot fresh water.
On Juliet, no one goes hungry – the cuisine on board is that irresistible. Home-cooked meals are served buffet-style, complete with delicious desserts and plenty of prepared snacks in between. Beverages, including a wide variety of beers, wines, and a full bar are included! They can accommodate any and all allergies and dietary restrictions, just be sure to let us know in advance.
DIVING at Mona Island

Of the many bays, coves, and islands of Puerto Rico, Mona Island is known as “the Galapagos of the Caribbean.” With over 250 different species of fish swimming through the waters of Mona Island, it is one of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders and primary attractions for experienced scuba divers. The waters are a protected ecological preserve, which always allows for better views when diving. Marine life at Mona Island is abundant, and divers regularly glimpse giant sea turtles, whales, dolphins and even world class blue marlins as these species migrate through the Mona Passage.
Although Mona Island is one of the premier dive sites in Puerto Rico, don’t be disappointed if you haven’t heard of it–or if you’ve been to the island and somehow missed it altogether. Because Mona is situated 40 miles west of Puerto Rico, those who want to visit will have to take a five or six hour boat ride to reach the island. The waters can be rough, making for a ride to remember and brag about later!
