Florida Keys Coral Restoration Trip

July 22-25, 2010

As divers we take advantage of the beauty of the underwater world. We enjoy its natural splendor and hope that future generations will benefit from it as we have. We can no longer take the continued existence of the coral reefs for granted - we are losing reefs at an unprecedented rate. That's why Atlantic Edge is taking a step towards an active role in coral reef preservation. This is your chance to take part in a trip that actually makes a difference in our underwater world. Join Atlantic Edge and the Coral Restoration Foundation on a unique diving experience in the Florida Keys. During this trip you will play an active role in preparing and transplanting corals from the coral nursery into their new home in the living reef. This is the trip you have been looking for- a trip that will provide a foundation for a new reef, new life and a healthier underwater world!

The Coral Restoration Foundation

The Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) is a 501 c (3) non-profit conservation organization dedicated to restoring coral reefs. The CRF promotes hands-on salvage of orphaned coral fragments and short-term care and growth in permitted offshore nursery sites. CRF is the continuation of a successful staghorn coral nursery and transplantation program initiated by Ken Nedimyer in the Florida Keys and the result of the re-organization of the former Keys Marine Conservancy. They promote hands on opportunities for divers and students in coral restoration activities.
The CRF has coral nurseries for Elkhorn and Staghorn coral which are grown and then transplanted into areas of the reef that are endangered.

What Will We Do

This is more than a trip, it’s an excursion to work with Ken Nedimyer, the founder of the Coral Restoration Foundation, to learn more about coral restoration and get some hands on experience. This trip includes presentations by Ken and will center around moving some of Ken’s nursery grown corals to a restoration site. The dives will involve preparing corals for transplanting, surveying the new transplant site, and finally moving these new healthy corals into their new home. You will also dive at previous restoration sites where you will see firsthand what the corals look like after one and two years.

* Will I Need a Car - We will need cars for this trip. As participants sign up, we will work with those interested to pair you with other divers who have similiar travel plans to split rental cars.
